Expression
I like this portrait, it's full of expression. And your choice of exposure is right on.

It's rare to get a "house snap" without some sort of background clutter or expression that goes awry. Faces are on the dark side, but that reflects the calm and relaxed atmosphere that leads to such pleasant smiles. The scissors being held up are a small touch that hits home with me, having two daughters that hold scissors a fair amount around the house themselves.

I concur that this is a very pleasant image and I compliment you on your lovely family. You might try lightening the shadow side of the faces just a little to see if you like it better that way; could turn out it's best this way after all.

I have my monitor on 75% brightness, and it looks alright. If I wanted to lighten one side of the faces, which Photoshop tool would I use? Dodge/burn?

Andrew, I think perhaps if you want to light just one side of their faces, you might try using the gradient tool
Enlarge the image by say 200 %, select the area of interest, apply a linear gradient tool at some percentage--to achieve your goal, deselect the tool. Also be sure to do this on a layer, perhaps, to preserve the original image.
Please allow me to add, "I find he image very appealing as it stands." The lightening might help--but in my view not a necessity. ;-)a
Thanks
very much for that , Jerome. I've never used the gradient tool before. I suppose it could actually come in very useful for B&Ws.
