Tobacco warehouses. A person or two could help this image, but there was no one in sight.

You're right about the people, I suppose, Bradley. As photographed, the scene has a kind of haunted quality, almost as if it is a deserted movie set. But it might NOT be improved by the presence of people, either. The vacant nature of the place, and the turn-of-century architecture of the buildings, add up to a certain charm about the photograph. And how do you manage so well to keep verticals vertical with the 21??

Bradley you know, I think about the time when I a kid and the textile factories were cutting back--the red brick complexes looked just like this fifteen minutes after closing. Nice control of the image lines. I would hope for a bit more detail in the sky, if possible-- its an awfully empty sky.

... a frontal shot would have been more impressive as a 'portrait' of this building. It would also make it easier to get rid of the emty-sky problem. Not of the absence of people, of course.
Wilfred van der Vegte 28-Jun-2002 at 13:03I agree that the sky appears too blank. Perhaps converting the picture to B&W, and darkening the sky would provide the needed dramatic element. Overall, nicely composed. I really love places like this; and great job straightening the verticals.

I appreciate all your comments. The outer verticle lines were leaning quite a bit on the original photo. I straightened them in Photoshop (Edit, Transform, Distort). I was so pleased that the lighting was good that I did not notice the blank sky until the film was developed. I think I have a frontal shot still in the camera. I have not done any B&W conversions, maybe I will try on this photo. - Brad
