Night shots

The darkness is hiding (somewhat) the overall lack of sharpness resulting from your attempt to handhold this at such a slow shutter speed. It seems to me that the way to shoot this would have been at twice the exposure, f/8, resulting in a shutter speed of about 2 seconds (hello, tripod). Still, I love pictures of this sort, and have a special love of a shot of a gas station (by George Tice) in Cherrywood NJ, which you should definitely see http://www.peterfetterman.com/artists/tice/tice1_pic02.html

Good subject. I agree with Anker that the image could have been sharper. Only I don't see what f/8 would improve here - I guess f/2 gives enough DOF at this distance. Just use a tripod or find some other support.
Another thing is that a frontal view, with you standing exactly in front of the neon sign, might result in a stronger image.

Bradley if this is close give us a shot in Black and White. I have a weakness for true Art Deco.

Good point about the relationship between distance to subject and necessary DOF. Still, if you have to go to a tripod, as I think you'd have to for this, what advantage is there to f/2 over f/8?

Yep

I like the shot. Using a more sensitive film might me an option here I think. BTW Did you made some adjustments in PS or were the round signs that illuminating? Jan

Anker,

I guess if you really have a sturdy tripod, there's no advantage in f/2 over f/8, although I remember that some experts say that a smaller aperture will lead to so-called diffraction effects around concentrated light sources. Don't exactly know what they ;look like, though.

Thanks to all.

I appreciate your comments and suggestions. At 1/10 second, I am surprised this shot is not blurred. A tripod would have definitely helped, but I did not have one with me. A more sensitive film might be a better option because I would not want to spend too much time setting up on the side of the road in this neighborhood at night. Still, I would like to try different aperture/shutter speed combinations to see how the lighting would appear. The PS work was mainly a curves adjustment to improve the contrast plus sharpening. This did not change the illumination of the signs. I wanted a straight-on view, but there is a tree in front of the building. You can see it starting to clip the "C". - Brad
