Palace Guard - Anker Heegaard

Inspired by Knut's recent posting, here is one I took, about 15 feet from where Knut stood when taking his picture. I'm in the alcove that passes from the main courtyard to a sidestreet, walking towards Nyhavn. One of the nice things about Amalienborg's guards, is that they don't attract nearly the crowd of tourists that Buckingham does.

Anker, this is an interesting perspective here. What immediately strikes me is the massive appearance of the columns. The 35mm lens would not, I think, create a significant distortion of scale or am i wrong?

Bruce, I don't think the lens is creating a distortion of scale, as much as recording what it sees. If I remember right (back me up Knut), these columns are probably five feet in diameter. Add to that that they are in the foreground, and the guard is in the back, and you get the effect of the toy soldier.

Hmmn, you and Knut are pacing one another, eh? :-) I 'm undecided about the out of focus left front element--however, the column on the right is nice.... I, admit, too I want to see his jutting chin, too. Did you have an image of him--doing his about face? ;-)

I just drove by Amalienborg to check the position of your POV. This is as you say, in the alcove leading in to Amaliegade. My shot is not from this corner in fact just the opposite. I have the Kings/Queens wing left side in my pic so am am on the corner leading up to Amaliegade north. I am shooting towards the sea. The columns are about 1,2 meter in diameter so that are rather large. I think that the door here is the entrance to the guards quaters. If you face Amaliegade (south) this would be on your right side. Right? Or shall I take another look? I will shot one simlar to this the next time I pass by with my G.

Right, Amaliegade, to the south I think, and shooting to my right, and slightly behind me. I'll email you a map.

This is the only one I have of the guard. It seemed a hopelessly tourist subject (though Knut pulls it off). --Anker

This has great potential, though the size of the column on the left (distortion, fuzziness?) in the frame lets it down a bit, I think. I'd love to see you try more angles on this "tourist" shot...plenty of interesting options here.
