Man with a stick 2 - Ibbi

Thanks for the feedback my friends, and GG for the email and tweak. I've done this version, in pure BW, a bit lighter, more details in the clouds, a moody sky, and cropped out the left side, and cleaned dust - taking into account what everyone suggested on the previous image. What think you? Selected for the Hall of Fame on 2010/Dec/01

Fantastic. It's an epic view. I much prefer this version to the other one that you posted.

You are right, with your BW version this photo is more dramatic! You have done a good job! My rate is 10 "magna cum laude" Ciao gg

Again more fantastic treatment, the tones are perfect! But I am personally not in favor of this new cropping, the composition is less balanced, and the position of the major subject (the walking man, of course) has lost its place from a strong spot... my brain is too much formatted by the thirds rules, maybe ;) As you see Ibbi, it's difficult to please to everybody's taste :)

I prefer this, the clouds are very drama. This very fantastic photo

Thanks guys, an improvement then? Well, fed, you're right, can't please everyone! I find this 'cleaner' than the other, as was pointed out the left seemed too busy in the previous version. but whats better? this or the other similar colour shot??

Ibbi     19-Sep-2010 at 11:57

This one is a chef d'oeuvre of Black & White photography, the other one (HoF winner) is a master piece of color... apples and oranges :) Both are huge!

Man...2

I like this one better. Don't pay attention to "no crop" pleas. It's from the people that can compose in the camera every shot perfectly with their secret CZ zoom lenses.

Peter Kapa     20-Sep-2010 at 09:49

Better than the color version?

....well, ya. There is just so much more drama in the mountain peaks and clouds. It is a land with harsh weather and this feels more right, somehow. Of course you are displaying to a bunch of b&w fanatics, so that isn't so surprising to learn. :-) As Fred so rightly commented, a matter of 'apples and oranges'. Well done! Linc

I prefer the colour picture, apart from the composition on the colour one( taken a few minutes later and slightly different angle) I was reluctant to upload the BW one at first as I find it too 'messy', too much going on and the BW tones confuse it - it was very difficult to dodge/burn/level out to get the tones to look anything close to pleasing to the eye - I think this is quite over rated, and I reckon an 8 score (as Bally and Knut have given) is fair.

Ibbi     20-Sep-2010 at 16:22

I meant to say, apart from the composition on the colour one, colour suits the scene

Ibbi     20-Sep-2010 at 16:23

@ Peter Kapa

"Don't pay attention to "no crop" pleas. It's from the people that can compose in the camera every shot perfectly with their secret CZ zoom lenses." No, I can't "compose in the camera every shot perfectly with my secret CZ zoom lenses", just I meant the original composition - which is maybe already cropped, but in another way - suits better to my personal taste. Then, at the end Ibbi, please do feel free to pay attention to any comment, as you expected to receive constructive advices :)

Great !

Fantastic

Came across this after not visiting this site for some time. This is a wonderful monochrome shot. PP is spot on. Ignore the rule of thirds adherents, the subject us well placed, contextually perfect, and the scenery is stunning. Anything else is splitting hairs.

Thanks for the comments Chris and Jay, you encourage me! :) And welcome back jay!

wow-wee

a cracker! had to give it 10 :-)

Anthony Lloyd     24-Sep-2010 at 15:09

Anthony! a '10'? man, I think this is way over rated!

Ibbi     26-Sep-2010 at 15:40

Nice, Ibraar. I think you should try "real" b/w film if you get a chance, or Ilford XP2. That said, good color films still hold a lot possibilities for b/w conversion (as nicely demonstrated here), particularly with new software (LR3, Nik Silver Efex, etc) and is easier. But with b/w film in the camera, one shoots differently, looking for b/w motives. Best, Peter

Peter S     27-Sep-2010 at 14:15

Hi Pete, thanks my friend, for the comments. I of course have shot a LOT of BW film, which I develop with ID11- this just happens to be a BW conversion of an alternative composition similar to my "Man with Firewood" HoF image.

Ibbi     27-Sep-2010 at 17:18

Indeed, you have - I took some time to browse your gallery, there is some excellent b/w work! Should have looked closer before (-:

Peter S     29-Sep-2010 at 12:35

Again, congratulations for this new HoF entry, Ibbi! :) I think you beat all the records, nobody has never gotten so many photos in this prestigious gallery ;)
