Camera:   Contax G2
Lens:   Carl Zeiss Biogon 21mm f/2.8
Film:   Fuji Neopan Acros 100
Exposure:   f11
Flash:
Support:
Filter:   Red 25
Adjustment:   desat to turn it into proper BW, Curves, to bring out some contrast. I used 'shadow highlight' very subtly to help the sun light 'glow'. Apart from that I dodged the people, lightening them a touch and lightened Big Ben clock face slightly to make it stand out, burned in houses. and thats it. NOT HDR

I

like this shot very much. Contraposition of random human behaviour against steady human buildings is very well reinforced by the reflections of the guy's face and the Big Ben's one. Proper use of the red filter, enhancing tones. Cheers. Luca.

cheers man, it helped that the light was just right!

Ibbi     14-Jul-2008 at 12:42

AND, by the way,

Bloody good composition, too, Linc

Linc     14-Jul-2008 at 12:56

Nadi khan     14-Jul-2008 at 15:02

Tourists and bikes

There is something ethereal here - magical!

Merrill Morrow     14-Jul-2008 at 15:21

BT&BB!

It looks like a theater stage. And the sky is great, too. How did you get so many extras?

Peter Kapa     14-Jul-2008 at 18:32

Ibraar

Very good shot. It seems that it is governed by it own internal light. Yes, it look like a stage shot. A background milieu for a modern version of Dickens that are about to begin. In London of course. Did you do nothing at all in adjustments? Keep it up Ibraar :-). Knut

Knut Skjærven     14-Jul-2008 at 23:58

Cool

Really nice shot Ibraar. So much going on in one shot.

Ian James     15-Jul-2008 at 05:32

Knut,

Ibraar is a Flickr site user and I think he has hit us with a very good 'HD photography' example and has not told us about it yet. Linc

Linc     15-Jul-2008 at 06:13

Wonderful

shot, Ibraar. I love it! You have done some adjustments here, haven´t you. There must be some dodging and burning. The composition is very good. Regards, Bernt

Bernt Kristian     15-Jul-2008 at 06:15

Well it's ok......................

Well it's not a bad photo................. It's bleeding great!

[Unknown]     15-Jul-2008 at 06:17

Well,

Linc you posted your comment while I was writing. Your post explains a lot. Thanks! All the best, Bernt

HDR

Actually, this photo manipulation is called HDR(High Dynamic Range) and there are several programs including a Photoshop plugin that can create this. It is very often achieved by shooting several images of the scene at diff' exposure levels or actually using one image and combining several 'exposures' of the same image. The software creates this effect via local sharpening effects. It is more difficult to produce with analog pics and is often used with digital, since it is easy to shoot several images of the same scene at diff' exposure settings. It is a very interesting medium and i'm glad Ibraar has shown a good example here. The big complaint about HDR is that most folks go so far overboard that it makes the image look fake, I think Ibraar has done a tasteful job here. Linc

:)

Cheers guys, ADJUSTMENTS Sorry I forgot to mention these in the field, as I quickly uploaded it. I used Curves, to bring out some contrast. I used 'shadow highlight' very subtly to help the sun light 'glow'. Apart from that I dodged the people, lightening them a touch and lightened Big Ben clock face slightly to make it stand out. and thats it. LINC? HDR? No, not at all, how could i possibly take 3 shots of this scene with people? it's Film dear! :)

Ibbi     15-Jul-2008 at 07:37

the only difference between the original neg scan and this is that the original scan is a bit 'flat', and a bit darker. but I was VERY pleased with the original scan anyhow.

Ibbi     15-Jul-2008 at 07:40

I have always wanted to take a shot like this, ever since I saw some of Don McCullins 'in England' stuff, and on Sunday I was given the opportunity. I was virtually sitting in my missus lap :) well, she was sitting on a wall, with kids yapping in my ears, and I was standing facing the path, leaning on her, saw the light was superb, and the houses of parliament and big ben were in a nice place, composed a shot, locked exposure (it was for the pavement I think) waited for that guy with the camcorder to approach (as a point of interest) and rolled off an exposure.

Looking for Riders

Bonjour Ibraar, Well that's a really good shot ... even if we consider bikes :-) I think this would be a really good example of how a picture takes some interest when including bikes. Why don't you post it to The Rider Cup folder and join the group ? (Who said I'm addicted to bikes ?) Best regards,

Fab     15-Jul-2008 at 09:07

Ooops

I should have check the Bike Factory group before : welcome Ibbz. Great to have you in the group. Anyhow, my comment on Bloody Bikes is still true : post it or a copy into the Rider Cup folder. Pleaaaaaase Best regards,

Fab     15-Jul-2008 at 09:11

unfortunately it seems as if one is only able to post ONE image to the Rider Cup. :(

Ibbi     15-Jul-2008 at 11:51

Ibraar,

It's an exceptional image, no matter how you slice it. HDR can be done with film and with only one exposure.....DEAR!!...... It's just a matter of scanning the film at diff' exposure levels. This image has all the ear marks of an HDR. If it smells like a duck, walks like a duck, sounds like a duck and looks like a duck; well then, it IS a duck. Combining exposure levels is one thing, doing local contrast adjustments is another. Let's just say, I ain't convinced. Linc

Linc     15-Jul-2008 at 13:09

Linc! :) Dear! ;) The only adjustments made were the ones described. I did not combine different exposures or anything, and only made one scan, if you wish I'll post the original scan and attach it to this. It looks like a duck, walks like a duck, smells like a duck, but it is a Goose! :) It DOES have an HDR 'look' to it, but it isn't in any way shape or form!

Ibbi     15-Jul-2008 at 14:09

Shadow/Highlight in PS is an excellent tool when combined with curves or levels. I also use the 'dodge burn' method I have described previously, by using Layers. click 'layer' 'new layer' set colour to 'none', mode 'overlay', opacity to 40% (or more or less) click OK. Then use the Brush tool to burn or dodge (pressing 'x' to switch between the two) far more effective than the dodge burn tools. and merge when finished

Ibbi     15-Jul-2008 at 14:15

Ibraar

It would be very nice to see what this pictures looked like before you did the dodging. Just to see how much the dodging effected the final result. Knut

Knut Skjærven     15-Jul-2008 at 14:53

Credit

It does have the feel of a HDR due to the depth of information in the shadow areas. I have used the shadow / highlight tool and it is good for lifting shadow areas in an image. Linc, I think its a bit unfair on Ibraar to not believe him that it is not a HDR. I think the credit should go to Ibraar for some bloddy good post production of that was probably a bloody good image to start with.

Ian James     16-Jul-2008 at 03:36

Very good shot.

chris kolb     16-Jul-2008 at 11:11

**

Maybe you're right, Ian, but I'm waiting for Ibraar to attach the original to make a comparison. Since you are familiar with the technique, I would be interested to see you create this image from the original....... ;-) Linc

Linc     16-Jul-2008 at 17:40

Hummm

Ok, right. I think I was really tired this time. Yes, only one pic per photographer is permitted, but I should have open my eyes to that you already posted one. Sorry. Amitiès,

Fab     17-Jul-2008 at 07:14

Here we go - original attached!

Ibbi     17-Jul-2008 at 16:04

Real Nice

Beyond the spontaneous nature of this photo, there is a pleasing graphic with the line of bicycles dovetailing into the shooter. This in turn is split nicely by threatening clouds. Bloody good.

Ken LaValle     18-Jul-2008 at 13:50

Cheers Ken!

Ibbi     19-Jul-2008 at 05:21

Wow!!

Ibraar, your image has over 2000 hits! It is the most viewed front page image I have ever seen. Congratulations! Linc

Linc     20-Jul-2008 at 18:05

That's truely something! But who could be possibly looking at this 2000 times?? There's only 21 ratings, and a few regulars such as Ronald and Armen and Greg haven't commented nor rated! It's ironic that I was raving about landscapes and Velvia, and subsequently shot and uploaded a street scene in BW which people like! haha!

Ibbi     21-Jul-2008 at 03:03

Grabs ya

Nice got the moment and post production
