film's fine...
I think your lighting needs improvement. Tri-X is capable of wonderful tones and texture. There's one guy out there who does amazingly beautiful still life shots with nothing but Tri-X and a yellow filter--his name escapes me now--but the key is his lighting. I'm no expert on lighting for still life shots but I think that would be your ticket. BTW, is this a scan of a print or the negative?

from the negative. Lighting is just morning ambient lighting in our kitchen.

This is an excellent shot, especially in view of teh limited lighting available. Your pencil must be more powerful than your camera!

what you mean: based on" pencil drawings? Yes this should be dominantly ivory. Just trying to understand the competiton concept rigth.

"based on" was not the best choice of words. I simply meant that I did a series of similar still life drawings in college and wanted to compare the results of the differing media. As far as the competition, I envisioned an Ivory image being predominately Zone 6 and above and Ebony being Zone 4 and below. Very simple examples might be eggs on white linen for an Ivory and a lump of coal on a dark stone tabletop for an ebony.
