Mother & Daughter - Bruce McKinney

Low light allowed for limited DOF. Given the choice of in focus wife or daughter, I chose daughter to the delight of wife.

nice...

but you should have whipped out the tripod and got both of them in focus with a slightly deeper DOF IMHO. Nice expression on the baby's face, I like the wife's too. The placement of the two, top and bottom, left and right works ok too. A tighter crop perhaps taking out the babe's tummy might improve things a tad-the striped shirt of the baby sort of exaggerates her belly too much. The wrinkled fabric in the background distracts a little too. Overall though a pleasant portrait. I would humbly recommend the next time turning this kind of grab shot into a more deliberate and thought-out portrait, a small bit more attention to some details, and you'd have a real winner.

Nice photo

The value of this site is not only do you get to see pleasing photos like this one, but all of us can learn from thoughtful comments such as the one posted by Richard. I agree that a tight crop would help for the reasons stated and that it's a shame the image is not sharper. Its nice to know that I am not the only one!

I'm a great believer in grab shots that show life as it really is and not as we would try to arrange it. I like the mother a little out focus. I think it adds a nice softness and reality to an uncontrieved photo. We all do the best we can at the time of exposure. I agree with Richard, a pleasant photograph.
