'Swiss Cottage' - Liam O'Brien

Click on image for best quality. Known as Swiss Cottage the building is actually a cottage orne, built in the early 1800's by Richard Butler, the 1st Earl of Glengall, to a design of the famous regency architect John Nash. Essentially it was a playhouse of the wealthy, who dressed as peasants for amusement. However, twenty real tenant peasant dwellings were moved by the Earl as they spoilt the view from the cottage! The Earl occupied 6,000 acres of land at the time but subsequently became bankrupt. It is located at Cahir, Co. Tipperary and open to the public.
