Joel - jason hupe

Joel, the son of James, a farmer in Eastern Colorado. I spent time with this family on their farm and learned how difficult it was to raise crops in a near desert climate. James, a second generation farmer, hopes that neither of his sons decides to keep the family business going. As of now, Joel wants to be a farmer. Selected for the Hall of Fame on 2005/Apr/01

Am I the only one to be reading "Collapse?" How tragic!
George Shadoan 20-Jan-2005 at 19:12I'd like to me this young man
There is obviously something special here (photo and subject). Very well done indeed!
James Castellini 20-Jan-2005 at 23:01What a mournful expression...
remarkable photograph. Very rare that this kind of photography moves me and yours has.

Comes immediately to mind when I view this moving portrait. This child looks like he's carrying the weight of the world. Very, very well done.

Reminds me of 1930's dustbowl documentary photos. Very moving.

Knut Skjærven 22-Jan-2005 at 02:52Wow
These eyes seem to have a kind of enormous tear-pouring potential... Brilliant picture. Tech talk : great bokeh & grain, too.

Best Image I've seen in awhile.....Gets my vote for HOF
Dieter DerWiener 22-Jan-2005 at 20:44Great portrait
... only thing is that I would have cropped the upper part - it doesn't seem to add anything.
Wilfred van der Vegte 25-Jan-2005 at 06:32the eyes are compelling, but.......
there's a great story behind this head shot. And, it's not conveyed in the image. Maybe backing off to show some of the environment would have diluted the impact of the eyes, but it would have added something to the overall message conveyed.
Bob Michaels 25-Jan-2005 at 15:40absolutely soulful image ..... the emotions from this image seem to flow out constantly
Ed Ng 01-Apr-2005 at 19:52absolutely soulful image ..... the emotions from this image seem to flow out constantly
Ed Ng 01-Apr-2005 at 19:53It's true,
a picture really does speak a thousand words. A sad plight for the farmer, but a great social awareness opportunity for the photographer.
Keefo 06-Jul-2005 at 12:49keep the space at top
The space at the top gives the boy his diminutive stature. Composition, even in portraits, can be everything. It helps tell the story. Such a good piece.
